The FIB Music Festival sponsored by Heineken, is the biggest musical fixture in the Spanish calendar. Organisers regard performances from Oasis and Leonard Cohen at Benicassim, as pivotal moments in spanish festival history.
Nowadays, Benicassim is closely associated with spectacular performances from artists and groups known across the world. Each summer, this small town of 20,000 habitants swells in size as music lovers from all across Europe swarm into Benicassim. Concerts that stretch long into the night and 24 hour parties mix with the warm mediterranean waters and the everpresent spanish sun to produce a musical experience that you'll take with you to the grave.
FIB Festival 2010 takes place between the 15th and 19th of July, with such illustrious names as The Prodigy, Kasabian and Vampire Weekend already confirmed.
If you are a music lover, you should visit the Fib a Benicassim at least once in your lifetime. There aren't many in the world that mix music concerts with a laidback beach atmosphere so effortlessly. One great big shopwindow for up and coming bands, the FIB has seen the birth of many of todays supergroups, as well as demonstrations of greatness from those already established. Since its incarnation in 1995, Benicassim has seen groups such as Muse, Iggy Pop, Artic Monkeys, The Strockes, Franz Ferdinand, Mande Diao, Calexico, Placebo, Pixies,Sibian Mobile Disco, Animal Collective, Underworld, The Kills, The Cure, all pass through its gates. With such a colourful and varied history in only 15 years of existence, Benicassim is the undisputed king of music in Spain.
It comes strongly recommended from someone who has gone through this experience themselves, to find accommodation in Benicassim itself, or use the camping facilities your weekend pass permits. Oropesa and Castellon usually have accommodations available until quite late, but getting back to these destinations without the guarantee of a lift can be tricky (with taxis and buses in incredibly short supply), so you could be left with a dark and lonely trek down the motorway.
If you have already decided that this year will be your FIB year, or if you are wanting to return to the scene of last years crime, be prepared to secure your tickets early, and if possible your accommodation even earlier, if camping isn't your thing. To get to Benicassim by car, the festival organisers highly recommend carsharing in order to prevent chaos in the designated parking areas. You can take the N-340 motorway from Castellon (12km north) and the AP-7m (Exit 45/46) from Barcelona, Reus and Valencia. Flying in, you can choose between the airports at Valencia-Manises, Reus, Alicante and Barcelona. From all of these destinations it is also possible to catch a bus connection to get to Benicassim, via Valencia and Castellon.
